Looking back on 2008
A difficult and a wet season

The 2008 season was very disappointing in terms of player numbers, poor weather and in the end relegation for the Saturday side from Division 3 of the Nidderdale League. There were some bright
points but there's no getting away from a very difficult and wet summer.
A significant number of matches were cancelled or badly affected due to the wet weather but of the games we did play only three were won. We had no proper wicket keeper; we were short of batsmen; and too many catches were dropped.
There are some important positives from the season and I will stress these! Firstly whilst we may have only won three games, we did beat Pateley Bridge and Middleham, both of which have been promoted to Division 2. It shows what the team is possible of achieving.
Secondly, some key individuals continued to perform well, in particular Charlie Hutchinson and Danny Wigby, who won the batting and bowling trophies respectively.
Thirdly we were able to call on a large number of juniors who willingly and enthusiastically supported the team. We often had four juniors playing and on one occasion had seven, aged 12 and 13 plus one 15 year old. |

Juniors playing regularly from the village included Simon Evans, Rhys Farren, Jonathan Venables and Alexander and Henry Worrall. This is clear evidence of the importance of the long term development of the club and the coaching of the juniors led by Martin Minett. Many thanks also to all the parents who have supported the juniors and the club.
Finally and importantly we have the benefit of excellent facilities at the club including this year new sight screens. Alan Wigby, our hard working groundsman and player, has prepared excellent wickets throughout the season, under very difficult conditions.
We will start the 2008 season in Division 4 and are working hard to find new players to add to the small core group. This added to the "ageing" juniors hopefully augurs well for next year!
The club needs the support of the village but critically needs new players. If you have any contacts or ideas please get in touch. What we hope is that as well as recruiting some regulars, a number of part-time players might join us for a few games.
