Thirty-six bowlers compete for trophy

 

Thirty six bowlers took part in the Eddie Bowes Trophy  competition on Sunday.

 
The bowlers were divided into 12 randomly picked triple teams, each playing six matches of 4 four ends.
 
The winning team, which achieved the highest aggregate score, comprised:  Margaret Simpson, Peter Slater and skipped by Ken Barker. The team was presented with the trophy by Ernest Wilson, the club Chairman.
 
After three and a half hours of bowling in surprisingly good weather  members enjoyed an excellent barbecue expertly cooked by Mervyn Beecroft and Richard Houseman.The ladies supplied salads and an array of superb desserts.

and Ken Barker with Ernest Wilson.


 

A busy week on the bowling green

 

Twenty four members took part  in a bowls drive with the players being split into eight triples, each playing four matches on different rinks.

 

The winners, who were the team with the best points difference, comprised Brenda Williams, John Kerr and Peter Slater.

 

Earlier in the week the club won a friendly at Burton Leonard, and on Wednesday the ladies beat Kirby Malzeard while the men lost to Kirby Malzeard in the Dalesman League, winning one match but losing the other with a greater losing margin.

A good start to the new season

 

The Bowling Club got the new season off to a good start with a win on all four rinks and an overall score of 88 to 70 points in a friendly against Dishforth.

 

The match was played in glorious weather and in a good spirit as the picture of Pauline Beecroft and Les Teal of Dishforth testifies!

 Bowling season gets off to an icy start

 

MUFFLED UP against the cold. Members of Bishop Monkton Bowling Club braved the

elements to get the new season under way. They played for a couple of hours before

retiring for a recuperative cuppa. The Croqueteers are hoping for better weather

when they start their new season on Sunday, April 27.

Successes on the bowling green this summer were rewarded at the Bishop Monkton Bowling Club's annual dinner and presentation of awards at the Village Hall.

 

Eight top performers, pictured above, picked up trophies in recognition of their achivements.

 

A superb dinner was enjoyed by 47 members who also took part in a quiz compiled by Mike and Jill Smith.

 
Winners were:
Ladies singles: Brenda Williams received the Marion Mulholland Rose Bowl from Pauline Beecroft who lost to Brenda in the final.
 
Men's singles:  Basil Birchall received the Oakdale Cup from Brenda Williams.
 
Random Pairs: Christine and Keith Alderson receive the trophy from Carol Bird and Basil Birchall, last year's winners.
 
Open singles: Basil Birchall received the Chairman's Challenge Cup from Ernest Wilson.                     
 
Triples Trophy:  Carol Bird, Florence Bowes and Barbara Wilson who won the Eddie Bowes Triples Trophy.
 
Gents v Ladies Trophy: Ernest Wilson received the Ladies Captain's Shield on behalf of the men's team from Brenda Williams.

Eddie would have been proud of you!

Earlier in the season the Bowling Club held 'The Eddie Bowes Trophy'  competition. It took the form of 10 triples teams which each played five games of four ends over the afternoon. The winner was the team with the best for/against total.

It was fitting that the winning team included Florence Bowes ,widow of the late Eddie, who certainly would have been very proud of her. Carol Bird skipped the winning team with Florence and Barbara Wilson.
